Birth Announcement at the Zoo!
San Diego has had a love affair with giant pandas ever since Basi and Yuan Yuan first came from China to visit the San Diego Zoo in 1987.
Since then, and after much red tape and tons of paperwork, a 12-year research loan program was negotiated between the zoo and China. Although Basi and Yuan Yuan returned to China, we later received Bai Yun and Shi Shi on September 10, 1996.
Bai Yun has given birth to:
- Hua Mei , fathered by Shi Shi, born on August 21, 1999; sent to China in February, 2004
Shi Shi returned to China in January of 2003, and Gao Gao arrived. After that, Bai Yun gave birth to:
- Mei Sheng, fathered by Gao Gao, born on August 19, 2003; scheduled to leave for China in October
- Su Lin, August 2, 2005
- And TODAY, Bai Yun’s fourth cub was born at 1:31 p.m! (You can even watch the birth if you want, in their Video Archive.)
The San Diego Zoo has the largest number of pandas in the United States.
If you’d like to see the pandas for yourself, the San Diego Zoo has an online Panda Cam that you can watch 24/7. For more information, check out the San Diego Zoo’s Giant Panda Research Station, including podcasts, a panda blog, a photo gallery, videos, and more!
Congratulations Bai Yun and Gao Gao. We can’t wait to find out if it’s a male or a female. Either way, we know it will be adorable.
