Teaching Applicants - Stay Away from Vista

by Carole A. Lane on June 15th, 2007

It’s 1 a.m. and I just returned from the VUSD Regular Meeting of the Board of Trustees.  For all I know, it’s still going.

I stayed through a couple of hours of board business and presentations, followed by more hours of impassioned parents, students, and teachers, pleading for the livelihoods of the teachers whose contracts have not been renewed.  At the end of it all (slightly after midnight), the board didn’t even take a moment to reflect on what they’d heard before defending their previous position.  They literally didn’t even confer with each other.  It was unbelievably insensitive, and completely insulting.

There were some heroes tonight.  Jan O’Reilly, President of the Vista Teachers Association made an extremely eloquent and thoughtful presentation.  I will give credit to the VUSD Board for at least staying late and allowing everyone with a “Hold” card a bit of time to speak, even if they weren’t really willing to listen.  I was very impressed at the caliber of the speeches from the audience members, albeit 2-minutes long each.

I’ll have much more to write about all of this later, but it occurs to me that interviews for the open Vista teaching positions will start tomorrow, so I’ll be brief and to the point.

Teaching applicants:  You do NOT want to work for the Vista Unified School District!

Thank you, I look forward to hearing what you have to say. I was appalled at the blatant lies and insensitivity that came from the school board last night. It disgusts me that school districts like Oceanside and San Marcos give priority to their substitutes and student teachers and Vista won’t even stand behind thier temporary teachers. Ultimately this will affect the students and that is what is really sad.

Thank you for writing this, hopefully the “over qualified” teachers that got interviews today read this and decided not to attend. I am a student at RBV and I attended to support my 7th grade teacher Mrs. Campbell. It was disgusting how the board members lacked respect for even children speaking. Please do stay away from VUSD.

Thanks, Natasha and Kendra. I’m glad you were there to support our wonderful teachers in the district, and I appreciate your feedback.

Not only were lies told by the school board, but also by the Assistant Superintendent (HR) when asked if principals had been contacted to give input on the temporary teachers. She said “yes”, but according to the teachers and principals, the real answer would have been “no”.

Thanks for the comment, Sue. The board also implied that the principals were lying if they told teachers that they didn’t have input. I’ve got to wonder how the principals feel about being made the scapegoat for the board’s actions.
