The San Diego Special Edition - November 19, 2007
Welcome to the November 19, 2007 edition of The San Diego Special Edition. Much of our attention has been on the recent wildfires that spread throughout the county. It’s not surprising that so many of this month’s articles come back to this topic. Although the fires are out now, we all know that this isn’t the last time that we’ll see them in San Diego, so it’s worth spending a bit more time sharing our memories and thinking about prevention.
Of course, that’s not all we’re thinking about. You’ll also find restaurant reviews, humor, news of an alcohol ban, a local birding map, and even an interview promoting a floating airport that could be built in San Diego! I hope you enjoy the articles submitted by our talented local writers, and find some blogs that you’ll want to bookmark or subscribe to their feeds. It’s such a privilege to share them with you.
animals
GrrlScientist presents California Wildfires — What About the Domestic Birds and Other Animals? posted at Living the Scientific Life, saying,
“Domestic animals and birds are being abandoned throughout southern California state when evacuation orders are given.”
Her story includes NASA images, maps and video of the fire, along with information about the ten biggest fires in the state.
I must have been on the same wavelength as GrrlScientist, as I’m presenting Birding in San Diego County as my contribution from TheSanDiegoBeat this month.
business
Next, Marti Gellens presents How to hire a Cleaning Service in La Jolla! posted at La Jolla Real Estate: La Jolla Luxury Homes. This little primer points out some good reasons for hiring a cleaning service, steps for selecting one, and a short list of La Jolla cleaning services.
Whether you’re buying a home, maintaining or upgrading one, Dan Melson’s article, Real Estate: Know What Can Be Fixed and What Can’t, What’s Profitable and What Isn’t posted at Dan Melson’s San Diego Real Estate and
Mortgage Website provides some valuable insights into the expense and benefit of various home improvement projects.
And now, back to the fires, as Brian Brady presents Disaster Insurance Can Be a Big Mortgage posted at Mortgage Rates Report.
current affairs
David Balderston presents Helping Fire Victims posted at Life In…. His first-hand account of a family who lost everything in the wildfire is just heartbreaking.
Ian Welsh presents The Lost Art of Pulling Together posted at The Agonist, saying,
“Something strikes me as odd as I follow news of the fires in Southern California. The ability to mass mobilize society has been lost.”
entertainment
Now it’s time for a refreshment break. Can’t afford to go out? Jamie presents Cheap Eats in San Diego posted at Go San Diego Card Blog. In this article, Jamie recommends five local eateries for those on a budget.
If the restaurant reviews leave you a bit parched, Greg Wynn presents Lets Drink Some Beer! posted at BoozeSanDiego.com. In this review of half a dozen beer bars, he says,
“you’re not truly a local until you’ve hit all of these BoozeSanDiego.com favorites,”
so I guess it’s time to get drinking!
environment
In Peter Toner’s article, San Diego fires, future prevention, Peter illustrates how homes can be built to withstand a firestorm. You’ll find this posted at San Diego Real Estate Blog - Peter Toner.
For those looking for ways to clean up hazardous waste after the fires, Jeff Dowler at active rain presents San Diego Fires - A GREEN Way to Helping Families and the Environment .
Does San Diego need a floating airport? Debra Simpson presents an audio interview with the promoter Adam England, along with her article, Euphlotea, Has It’s Time Come? posted at http://www.northsandiegobusiness.com .
family
Now, for a much deserved moment of levity, Melissa Weber presents Surrender, But Don’t Give Yourself Away posted at Domestic Irritation.
news
Here’s a sobering thought: Carrie Tayloe presents City Council Bans Alcohol on the Beaches posted at Go San Diego Card Blog, along with the most gorgeous picture of Pacific Beach imaginable.

DWSUWF presents Red Wind posted at Divided We Stand United We Fall, saying,
“There was a desert wind blowing that night. It was one of those hot dry Santa Anas that come down through the mountain passes and curl your hair and make your nerves jump and your skin itch. On nights like that every booze party ends in a fight. Meek little wives feel the edge of the carving knife and study their husbands’ necks. Anything can happen. You can even get a full glass of beer at a cocktail lounge. ” - Raymond Chandler”
With this, he recaps what was being written about the fires throughout the blogosphere.
Making a departure from his usually hilarious posts, self-described “Premier coupon model and witty blogger” Arun presents The San Diego Inferno posted at Arun is Bringing You…Your Daily Remedy. In this article, he recounts an interesting story from an EMT involved in a rescue.
That concludes this edition. Sincere thanks to all of the wonderful San Diego Bloggers who participated, as well as those who stopped by to read their entries.
